The Meaning Behind BTS Win in Billboard Music Awards
Not only in Korea, BTS is now performing overseas. On May 22, in Las Vegas America on ‘US Billboard Music Award’ BTS received the award as Top Social Media Artist. This becomes even more important as they become the first Korean group to win the award after PSY.
‘Top Social Media Artist’ counted the data from the total sales of digital music albums, streaming, radio broadcasting, performances and social participation from March 18, 2016 to March 16, 2017 and also global fan vote that opened on May 1st. BTS competed with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Shawn Mendes in the ‘Top Social Media Artist’ category.
BTS becomes the second winner of the Billboard award after PSY. in May 2013, PSY won the ‘Top Streaming Song (Video)’ category on the Billboard Music Awards. But BTS becomes the first Korean K-POP group to win the Billboard Music Awards.
The victory in the billboard music award is not only meaningful for BTS but it is also an important thing for the Korean music industry. Because the voting proves that K-POP has been known by foreign fans who are outside of Korea.
Furthermore, what extraordinary things will BTS do? That led to expectations of their next step after the Billboard Music Awards.
