South Korea Needs to Take Matter of Plagiarism Seriously

China’s plagiarism of South Korean entertainment shows keeps on going. Not only variety show, Korean dramas have also become the object of plagiarism. This situation has created quite a controversy. Recently, a local Chinese media, Sina.com, introduced a new TV series called ‘We Are an Adult’, which will premiere on December at Anhui.

It was then discovered that ‘We Are an Adult’ plagiarizes tvN’s drama ‘Reply 1988’, a drama about a man who lives in Ssangmun-dong during the 1980s.

‘We Are an Adult’ is also set in 1980s. The plot of this drama focuses on family, neighbor dramas, and youth, just like ‘Reply 1988’. This is not the first time a Chinese production plagiarizes South Korean shows.

In addition, there is also a Chinese version of ‘Youn’s Kitchen’. In the Korean version, Yoon Yuh Jung, Lee Seo Jin, Shin Goo, dan Jung Yoo Mi opened a simple Korean restaurant in an island. The same format is used by ‘Jung Chanting’ from China.

Other than that, several popular programs such as ‘Three Meals A Day’, ‘Hello Counselor’, ‘Produce 101’, ‘Show Me The Money’, ‘I Can See Your Voice’, and ‘Fantastic Duo’ are also the objects of plagiarism.

Many people have argued that China has done too much plagiarism, and ironically, most of the plagiarized programs are the ones that are highly rated by audience, so people could easily catch up if they are suspicious of plagiarism. In fact, audience ratings and popularity lead to temptations for plagiarism. The public believes that South Korea needs to take serious actions to prevent more plagiarism from happening.
