Weekend Starts at Friday! Friday-Saturday is Now an Important Slot for Dramas

One of the many shifts in television drama is its prime time. In the past, Saturday and Sunday used to be the prime time of the weekend. In the present, weekend starts in Friday! The cause for this impression is because these days, a lot of hit dramas are the ones that are aired in Friday and Saturday.

Realizing this, KBS has been busy gearing up to improve the quality of its weekend dramas by prepping up two titles, ‘The Best Hit’ (in which Cha Tae Hyun acts as the actor and co-director) and ‘Strongest Delivery Man’.

However, the tv channel which deserves the title as Friday-Saturday trendstetter is tvN. At first, airing their drama on Friday and Saturday was tvN’s strategy to avoid competing with the three terrestrial channels (KBS, SBS, MBC). This strategy proves to be successful as the channel’s three hit dramas: ‘Misaeng’, ‘Reply 1988’, and ‘Goblin’ are those that were aired on Friday – Saturday drama slot.

tvN’s strategy was closely followed by JTBC, another cable TV channel. JTBC started to put its flagship dramas on Friday – Saturday slot. ‘Strong Woman Do Bong Soon’, which gained more than 10% viewer rating and ranked first among all TV programs aired at the same time, further confirmed the apropos of this strategy.

“Friday-Saturday drama slot used to have lower viewer rating than Monday-Tuesday, Wednesday-Thursday, or weekend slot, but now, the table has turned,” said a representative of tvN. Two cable TV channels, tvN and JTBC, have played an important role to increase the popularity Friday-Saturday dramas.
